What quality makes a home theater receiver like the Onkyo TX-NR818 truly great? Is it 7.2-channels of full surround sound for audio that truly immerses you in the action? Or might it be the 135W of power per channel that lets your speakers show you what they can really do? Of course, the Burr Brown DACs for true-to-source audio performance don't hurt. Beyond the home theater hub

I've had the 818 for almost two weeks now. It feels well built and thought out from the front bezel to the internal fans for cooling. Even the speaker terminals in the rear are well thought out. Setup was a breeze, and even warned me that I had plugged the rear channels into the wrong posts it was a bit confusing with surround and surround back. This is my first Onkyo product, and I am impressed that they specifically call out a 4 ohm load support on their datasheets. In this price range, other manufacturers neglect to mention this, even though most AVRs will drive a 4Ohm load just fine. I was deciding between this unit, a Denon 3312 and a 3313. I feel I made the right choice.

I recently purhcased yet another quality product from the good folks at Vanns and I must say this Onkyo TX-NR818 is without a doubt the best addition to my home theatre in many years.

It lacks nothing in either power or features and is head and shoulders above my two year old TX-SR608 and my Harmon Kardon DPR1001. Source material comes form a 400 disc Sony ES series Blu Ray player, an Onkyo 6 disc CD player as well as a 300 disc Sony CD player and the main speakers are Klipsch V36 towers purchased from Vanns. The addition of networking capability is fantastic! I listen to Jazz, not smooooooooooood jahzzzz, but the real thing. Jazz. And there are a ton of excellent stations on the internet playing real Jazz and the 818 brings them all to me with ease.

The ability to receive firmware updates via the internet is another feature that is much appreciated and the power output of this receiver is more than enough. Plus, it is THX rated as was my 608 and that in and of itself speaks volumes toward the build and feature quality of this Onkyo.

On thing that in particular made me desire this particular Onkyo was its ability to up-convert my collection of over 500 laser discs and it does so with greater overall clarity than did my 608. I cannot recommend this receiver and Vanns enough.

Our new Onkyo TX-NR818 replaced an aging but still operational Adcom GFR-700 AV receiver. Last weekend I pulled out the Adcom and installed the Onkyo. Installation and connection of components was straight forward and included an HD monitor not TV, blu-ray player, cable TV box, Apple TV box, phono, and cassette players. The phono has its own preamp and connects together with the cassete players through an audio switch box to the audio left-right stereo RCA jacks of the Game1 input on the Onkyo. I Bi-Amped the two front speakers to the Onkyo for a noticeable improvement in the sound of those speakers. Bi-amping uses four of the Onkyo amps, so the system now powers a 51 surround sound system with a line output to the self powered subwoofer. My room size effectively will only accommodate a 51 speakerset up, so the use of two amps to bi-amp each of the front speakers is acceptable to me. The instructions for the Onkyo were clear that in my case the Blu-ray, cable box, and Apple TV all needed to be connected by both HDMI and either an optical or a coax cable, so I did so and reconfigured the Onkyo to accommodate and reassign those additional separate audio connections. The manual on the how to reconfigurate the audio connections is a little skimpy, but the on-TV screen menu is exceedingly clear, so the process was easy. Same for the Audessey speaker configuration, it too was easy. Put the Audessy mike on a camera tripod, plug the Audessey mike into the Onkyo, set the decible level of the subwoofer with the independent subwoofer remote to match the Onkyo suggested setting and run Audessey and the surround speakers are balanced.

Put a THX formatted Blu-Ray disk in the player. Read the directions and set the Audio Mode to THX theater and play the disk. Wow! The sound is impressive. Even better than the Adcom, which was itself pretty impressive. Adjust the volume and the Onkyo balances the high and lows so that to the ear the highs and lows appear to remain balanced with the volume changes. Nice feature. I can turn down thre volume and still hear the same highs and lows that could be heard at a higher volume.

Now to check out the Apple TV and play some of that music I had downloaded through iTunes to iCloud. Found some jazz on my Apple TV and set the Onkyo audio mode to unplugged music which gives a balance to the acoustic jazz that puts the listener in the front seat of a small bar. Nice. Find some symphony music on the Apple TV and set the Onkyo audio mode to Orchestra and the mode approximates a larger orchestral venue. Also Nice. Oh, and by the way, the Onkyo remote when the input is connected to Apple TV automatically becomes the Apple TV remote.

One more test of Apple TV, AirPlay of iCloud streamed photos from my wifes iPad. Nice way to share photos through the Onkyo onto the HD monitor while playing some iCloud music in the background also through the Onkyo.

Nice product. Only the test of time can establish the units reliability and longevity, but fresh out of the box it is an excellent unit.
