First, I would like to thank the people at Vanns. They were very nice and helpful on making this purchase. Will definitely deal with again.
Now on to the actual product.
This receiver is nicer then I expected. Dont let the 50 watts per channel fool you. My last receiver was 100 watts per channel, and wasnt bad, but the R-S300 definitely has more punch. The audio is clear, detailed and powerful. I have this hooked up using Polk Audio RT600i towers, Monster Cable Z1R speaker cables and there is definitely no need for a subwoofer. Even though it does have a subwoofer output. My CDs sound better and blu-rays sound awesome!
It also has some nice features such as the Max and Initial Volume. This is great if you have kids. Just set the Max Volume setting so you dont have to worry about your kids or anyone over-cranking your speakers. The Initial Volume setting is a setting so that you can set the volume at what ever you want for when you first turn on the receiver. No need to worry about the volume being accidentally cranked up when you first turn it on.
Not much of a complaint but the volume is kind of odd. The volume goes from -89.5 to 16.5 but not much sound is audible until around -50. But thats easily fixed by setting the Initial Volume setting to -50. Maybe the lower volume settings is more effective when using headphones, which I havent tried myself. CDs sound clear and loud around at about -15 and blu-rays sound very nice at about -10. So I just set the Max Volume setting to -10. But of course depending on your components you have hooked up to this receiver may differ depending on their output levels.
Anyways, I really like this receiver and Im glad I chose it over the two I was comparing. Price is a little high for a stereo receiver but I guess you pay for good quality parts and clean sound. Which is what Yamaha is known for.
