I went out on a limb buying this Ipod dock without first hearing it, and I'm glad I did. For its size and WAF, this little dock really puts out good sound. My wife wouldn't let me put speakers and an integrated amp in our bedroom, so I was trying to find a good alternative that she would accept. I was considering the B&W Zeppelin, but its size was still too much for my wife, and thats when I found the SOMA. Its quite compact, but still has 2, 4 woofers, and two separate tweeters. Audysseys use of sound processing has really helped the bass response out in such a small package, and the overall sound quality is excellent. It also puts out enough volume to easily fill a good sized room. The sound is excellent across the entire sound spectrum. It does fall a little short with stereo separation since the speakers are so close together, but I think you would need two separate speakers to do better. I'm certain that this is one of the best sounding ipod docks on the market.
I'm using an older 5th gen ipod, and it will still works with it although it won't controll the ipod with the remote like it will the newer ipod models, and the 3.5mm accessory cable works well with my Sony player. It also works as an external speaker for a computer, but you have to use a 3.5mm jack for this. I was hoping that it would work as an external DAC through the USB, but the USB jack is only used to sync your ipod with your computer. As far as the bluetooth connection, I'm very impressed! It synced with my Droid phone very easily, and the sound quality for bluetooth is good not as good as a direct connection, but the direct connection sound is excellent, so its hard to compare. I used my phone to stream pandora, and didn't have any problems at all. In addition, it works great for calls as well, and its not even designed for the Droid. I can only imagine how well it works with the iphone which it is designed for.
As far as build qualiy, this dock is built like a tank. Its 9 pounds, and very solid. The ipod sits very securely on the cradle, and the controls are very intuitive. Because of its weight, its not the most portable speaker, but moving it from room to room wouldn't be too hard.
Overall, I think this is an excellent choice of a ipod dock for someone who really values sound quality, but has limitations with space. The extra features on this dock also really increase the value. It is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. The only thing that I wish it would do that it doesn't is to act as an external DAC for your computer.
